Abstract
Territory Day, celebrated annually on 1 July in the Northern Territory (NT), marks the Territory’s self-governance. It is uniquely distinguished by permitting the general public to purchase and use consumer fireworks without a licence — a tradition colloquially known as Cracker Night. While a significant cultural celebration, it is consistently associated with spikes in emergency presentations across the NT. The NT Centre for Disease Control (CDC) has systematically monitored firework-related injuries (FWRIs) for decades, documenting recurring patterns. Surveillance has shown that: Males and children represent a substantial proportion of those injured. Bystanders, not just users, are frequently affected. The hands, face and eyes are the most commonly injured sites, with burns the predominant injury type. A notable number of cases require hospital admission, surgery or intensive care, although most are managed conservatively. Despite targeted safety and public awareness campaigns, FWRIs remain a predictable and preventable burden on the health system during this event.
