The National Health and Medical Research Council recommended at their 92nd Session in 1982 the formation of Multidisciplinary Teams to assess and plan treatment for children with handicaps. By October 1982 discussion was taking place amongst interested staff with a view to establishing such a team for the children of the Top End. Out of these discussions was born the Helen Phillipps Child Health Assessment Team which met for the first time on 28 July 1983
