Description
Naltrexone and acamprosate are medications which are often prescribed by GPs to assist dependent patients to abstain from alcohol following withdrawal. They significantly improve treatment outcomes and reduce relapse to heavy drinking when added to the other usual components of treatment - progress monitoring; psychosocial strategies such as supportive discussion, counselling, motivational interviewing, CBT, AA; referral as indicated.
