Abstract
The use of Casemix classification systems by Australian hospitals has many implications for change. Whether its ultimate use is for improvement in the quality of service provided to patients and related outcomes, resource allocation, management of health service delivery, as a facilitator of structural change in health service delivery institutions or some combination of all of these, it remains a scientific measurement system.
