This booklet contains information to help you to notify important conditions to the Centre for Disease Control (CDC). The number of conditions that require notification by a doctor (or their representative) has been reduced over the past few years and the majority of notifications are now processed through the laboratory system.
Please acquaint yourself with the list of 'doctor' notifiable conditions (listed on page 6). Many are rare diseases ( such as botulism and plague) and some are becoming increasingly rare as a result of immunisation and other public health activities ( e.g. measles and Haemophilus influenzae type b infection).
In addition, please become familiar with the other notifiable diseases and recognise the importance of collecting specimens to confirm the diagnosis and which will trigger appropriate public health action.
