This report, Growing up in the Territory: Parent Survey, provides an invaluable picture of young children in the Northern Territory. It is the first time that a snapshot has been taken in this way of various aspects of Territory Children’s health and wellbeing and it represents a further step in improving the availability of information to guide action in their interests.

This report focuses on the measurement of social-emotional wellbeing and learning outcomes by connecting information from teachers about individual school children with information from parents collected during a detailed telephone survey. This report will inform practice and policy development in health, community and education services for children.

A compilation of the results of surveys and reports that deal with tobacco smoking in the Northern Territory.

This fact sheet updates selected mortality indicators for the Northern Territory by adding data from 2004 to previously published information. The analysis uses a compilation of annual Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) death datasets, and includes all deaths in Australia of NT residents, by year of death. Population estimates are based on ABS data from the 1996 and 2001 censuses.

To assist the development of the Northern Territory policies, the Primary Health and Coordinated Care and the Epidemiology Branches of Territory Health Services have collaborated to produce this report on the health status of children and young people in the Northern Territory. An important objective of the undertaking was, however, to produce a report in a format that informs and commands the attention of not only health professionals but the community at large.

This report provides an overview of the health and wellbeing of young people in the Northern Territory. It is the second in a series and like the previous report released in 1998, includes both health outcome indicators and information on key determinants of health and wellbeing. The availability of information has improved substantially over the past eight years, which has allowed the inclusion of new and expanded information. In this report there is a continued focus on the difference in outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Territorians. In addition this second report is able to provide improved trend information so that current data can becompared with information in the first report.

This report attempts to provide policy makers, researchers, health professionals and others, from a broad range of backgrounds, with a basis from which to better understand the issues confronting women’s health and wellbeing in the NT. The report has been developed based on the best available information, and the data presented are believed to be the most complete and up to date available. While not definitive, this report provides a comprehensive and reliable picture of the health and wellbeing of NT women. It covers the population characteristics of NT women, the social environment in which they live, their pregnancy and childbirth experiences, information on health and health behaviour and available health services.

This survey was undertaken by the Department of Health and Community Services (DHCS),in partnership with the National Heart Foundation (NT Division). Its primary aim was to measure levels of physical activity undertaken by residents of the Northern Territory aged between 18 and 54 years. The survey also gathered information on Territorians' knowledge and attitude in relation to current recommendations for participation in physical activity

The Northern Territory Health and Wellbeing Survey was conducted in December 2000 by the Department of Health and Community Services. It is the first large-scale population health survey in the Northern Territory to provide statistically robust information on the residents of metropolitan, rural and remote regions. Information on a range of health related topics was collected by telephone from 2,498 residents aged 18 years and over from metropolitan, rural and remote areas. The information provided by the respondents will assist the Department in developing and refining policies and programs aimed at improving the health of the population.

The key purpose of this report is to assess the magnitude of suicide deaths among Territorians. Information on the demographic, socio-economic and behavioural factors associated with suicide has been used to identify population groups most at risk. The report also includes information on attempted suicide by analysing available data on clients admitted to public hospitals with a diagnosis of intentional self-harm.

The Northern Territory has the highest smoking rates of any state or territory in Australia. This study aims to quantify the effect of smoking on mortality and hospital morbidity among residents of the Northern Territory for the period 1986–1995.

This report is the first volume in the Mortality in the Northern Territory 1981-2000 series, and provides an overview of information on Northern Territory (NT) deaths for the years 1981 to 2000. It provides detailed statistics for deaths from all causes, and for each of the major International Classification of Disease (ICD) chapters. Age-adjusted death rate, age-specific death rate and life expectancy are used to describe and compare health status within the Northern Territory population. Australian data is provided for comparison, where appropriate. The two subsequent volumes of this series provide disease specific causes of death including analysis of associated and underlying causes of death.

This comprehensive publication follows a series which reported on health status in the NT: Health Indicators in the Northern Territory published in 1986 (Devanesen and others) and Northern Territory Health Outcomes, Morbidity and Mortality, 1979–91 published in 1995 (Plant and others).

The aim of the Northern Territory Government’s Growth Assessment and Action (GAA) program is to improve the growth and nutritional status of children 0-5 years living in remote communities. GAA involves regular monitoring of growth and implementation of early action if growth falters. This report presents the results of the GAA data collection.

This Information Sheet provides an update on key indicators of mortality for the Northern Territory, as well as adding important historical data for the period from 1967 to 1980.1,2,3 The mortality dataset for this Information Sheet is Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) death datasets, and includes deaths of all NT residents within Australia by year of death. Population estimates are based on ABS census data.

The report provides an overview of hospital admissions in the five NT public hospitals for the period from 1976 to 2008. Information is provided on trends in hospital separation rates and length of stay for both NT Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations. Information on total admissions is available for all years, while information for specific conditions is provided from 1992 onwards. The information is presented by financial year.

This fact sheet provides a summary of trends in smoking prevalence in the NT, and importantly estimates the general NT smoking prevalence, which is not available from any single source.

This report provides an overview of mortality in the Northern Territory over the forty year period from 1967 to 2006. Information is provided separately for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Territorians with stratification by sex and age groups.
