Abstract
This course offers a basic pattern of literacy teaching which is easy to understand and easy to follow. It can be
used by trained or untrained literacy tutors after an initial inservice orientation. The learner decides the content of the course. They may want only basic functional literacy or they may want to extend their skills to a broader range of community skills.
It can be used by people who have had very little education themselves, but have the ability to pass on their literacy skills to others.
It gives concrete methods of recording health worker progress so that changes in tutoring staff do not hold back health worker learning.
The language experience methodology has been shown to be a successful method of literacy teaching for
beginning readers and writers.
