Abstract
As the 'capital' of the north, Darwin needs to provide a comprehensive range of medical services. Its
population base, however, is small. Ties with South East Asia have the capacity to broaden this base, thus allowing it to deliver a wider range of services that more adequately serve the people of the north.
Over and above this, Darwin already has a sophisticated health infrastructure that caters for many specialties. It therefore has not only the potential to export its expertise, but to become a training centre for the region. By embracing South East Asia, opportunities to diversify its role are multiplied.
