Abstract
Aboriginal people represent one fifth of the population of the Northern Territory. Territory Mental health services, however, are not designed to meet the needs of indigenous people. There are limited data available for prevalence of psychiatric disorders in Aboriginal people, yet it is likely that rates of psychiatric morbidity are high, and rates of health service utilisation low. The path to improve access of services to Aboriginal people must be through empowering Aboriginal people, and through rendering services more culturally appropriate. This project was undertaken as a component of the development of the Northern Territory Aboriginal Mental Health Policy.
This is a brief report summarising the findings only - whilst the full report comprises an accompanying literature review and detail of the methodology and process of both projects. PLEASE NOTE: There is no page 45 in the original document.
