Title
Screening guidelines for the initial health assessment of newly arrived refugees in the Northern Territory
Author(s)
Johnston, Vanessa
Abstract
Currently in Australia there is no overarching national refugee health policy. Each jurisdiction has developed their own models of care and local guidelines for screening newly arrived refugees. In the Northern Territory, which resettles up to 200 refugees annually, medical officers have relied on the NT Centre for Disease Control Guidelines (2006) and the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases Guidelines (ASID 2009) to guide them in screening refugees for common infectious diseases among this population. The 2011 screening guidelines build on these documents, incorporating the latest evidence on refugee
health, contextualising this evidence for the NT, and providing recommendations for
screening for both communicable and non-communicable disease.
