Abstract
Recent mosquito monitoring by the Katherine Health Surveyors indicated unseasonably high mosquito numbers of both pest and vector species. Initial attempts to establish the source of these mosquitoes located one probable source and larval control measures were started, but the problem persisted. The health
surveyors requested assistance from the Medical Entomology Branch in Darwin and a joint mosquito survey
was carried out in the Katherine urban and rural areas by Blair Jones of the Katherine Region and Peter Whelan of the Medical Entomology Branch, on the 13th and 14th of September. The major sources of mosquitoes were located. This report outlines the nature of the problem, the sources of mosquitoes, and the short and long term measures necessary to reduce the problem.
