Title
Morbidity in the Northern Territory 1999-2024
Author(s)
Abstract
This report presents a comprehensive analysis of public hospital separations in the Northern Territory (NT) from 1999 to 2024. Using ICD-10-AM principal diagnosis data, hospital admissions are examined by Aboriginal status, sex, age group, and major diagnostic categories. The report highlights long-term trends in morbidity, including the epidemiological transition from infectious diseases to chronic conditions, the substantial and increasing burden of renal dialysis, persistent and widening disparities affecting Aboriginal Territorians, and rising hospitalisations related to chronic disease, injury, mental health, and maternal and perinatal conditions. Findings provide an evidence base to inform NT Health planning, clinical service delivery, preventive strategies, and health system sustainability.
