The Northern Gold/Burnside Project will be located at the abandoned Cosmo Howley mine site, approximately 40 km SW of Adelaide River in the Northern Territory. The new mine will use conventional open cut mining and
processing methods. In February 1996 the Department of Mines and Energy recommended that the proponents conduct a baseline mosquito monitoring program, prior to the submission of a draft Environmental Impact Statement or Preliminary Environmental Report. The proponent agreed to conduct this program for 12 months, in co-operation with the Medical Entomology Branch of Territory Health Services. This report summarises the results of the first 12 months of baseline monitoring (confined to the NG mine site). The health implications of the predominant mosquito species trapped, their relative numbers, spatial and temporal distribution, and methods of reducing any artificially created breeding sites are discussed. The report is written from information based on the inspections conducted in 1996 and April 1997.
