Abstract |
Many children in rural and remote areas of the Northern Territory live in Aboriginal communities. Unlike babies and young children, school-age children ( 4-16 years) do not come to the clinic very often. They tend not to get sick enough to go to hospital but can still have health problems. The school check may be the only time they are seen by health staff.
The school is a good place to look after health. ALL children of school age should be checked whether they are at school or not. In communities where school attendance is poor, other ways of reaching children are needed. This may include talking with family/clan/skin groups and visiting outstations.
