Abstract: Recent advances in the management of alcohol related problems focus on prevention at primary and secondary levels. Screening techniques and low cost brief interventions are the hallmarks of secondary prevention strategies. The overall aim of these strategies is the minimisation of harm associated with alcohol use. At risk individuals are offered assistance to modify their alcohol intake before drinking habits are entrenched. Serious health and social consequences including dependence may then be avoided. Some practical aspects of implementing such a program are discussed.
