The BREATH Study: short and long-term effects of therapeutic exercise in children with bronchiectasis: a multi-centre randomised controlled trial

Abstract
To determine if an 8-week therapeutic exercise program (compared to wait-list controls) decreases the proportion of children who have any acute exacerbation over a 12 month period in children aged 6 to 13 years with bronchiectasis. Secondary objectives 1. to determine the efficacy of the exercise program in reducing parent-reported exacerbations in a 12-month period (i.e. not medically attended) 2. to determine the cost-effectiveness and cost-utility of the intervention 3. to assess the program's impact on FMS proficiency, habitual physical activity (PA), aerobic fitness, HR-QoL, perceived exercise competency and lung function. 4. to compare time to first exacerbation between the intervention and control groups 5. to compare rates of exacerbations in a 12 month period between the intervention and control groups 6. to understand barriers and faciitators to exercise in children with bronchiectasis ( qualitative study with seperate protocol to be submitted)
