Abstract |
There is evidence that outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation for chronich obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD improves exercise ability, reduces breathlessness and improves quality of life for participants, however, only 5-10% of people with COPD ever attend rehabilitation, due to accessibility issues. A home based model has been developed and trialed, resulting in similar outcomes and costs to centre based programs. Importantly it showed that those who had their rehabilitation delivered at home were twice as likely to complete their rehabilitation. Previous research has suggested that offering a choice of rehabilitation setting (either home or clinic based) may increase completion rates and result in fewer hospitalisations. This cluster randomised implementation project will take place in 14 Australian clinics. It is designed to determine the beneftis and health care costs for participants with COPD who are offered the option of either home based or centre-based pulmonary rehabilitation compared to those who are only offered centre-based rehabilitation. Health outcomes and hospitalisation rates will be compared in the 12 months following the completion of pulmonary rehabilitation.
